Supervisors approve final plat for Fly subdivision north of Gear Avenue

Des Moines County supervisors voted unanimously June 3 to approve the final plat for a minor subdivision on Flint Bottom Road that splits an 18-acre parcel into a house lot and a business storage area.
Jared Laster, regional planning director, told the board the site north of the Gear Avenue intersection had previously hosted a junkyard and now has an excavation business that uses the southern portion for outdoor storage. The applicant proposes a roughly 2.5-acre lot around the house at the north end of the property, with a shared access easement that will maintain the existing driveway as the primary access for the home and a secondary access for the business.
The planning office recommended approval after county review flagged no major issues; the county public-health department required inspection of the existing septic system at the time of transfer. Laster noted the property falls inside the West Burlington two-mile review area and that West Burlington has already approved the subdivision.
Board action A motion to approve the final plat passed with affirmative votes recorded for Supervisor Tom Broker, Supervisor Shane McCampbell and Supervisor Jim Carrey.
Outcome and next steps The plat was approved and the county will require verification of septic condition when the house transfers ownership. Planning staff said they would follow up on recording the plat and ensuring the access easement is shown on final documents.
