Board approves a batch of permits, public‑assembly request and two streetlights at Memorial Drive

Permits approved included multiple street‑closure requests listed in the agenda, a public assembly permit for Aug. 2 from 5 to 7 p.m. on the south side of the courthouse, and Valparaiso University’s Go Valpo crosswalk painting at three locations (La Porte Ave, Union Street and University Park Drive). Engineering staff recommended approval of the university’s request. "They've done this a number of years now. They do a fantastic job every year," the presenter said.
The board also approved a temporary sidewalk closure requested by the owner of the former bank building on the corner of Franklin and Lincoln Way to allow a 3‑ to 4‑day power‑wash of brick and stone, with the owner required to notify the city in advance and protect pedestrians during the work.
On a safety item, the board approved installing two LED cobra‑style streetlights at 500 North and Memorial Drive near the St. Mary's entrance. A board member said the lights could reduce emergency response times and asked engineering to coordinate with NIPSCO for installation. "I'd like to see lights on both of them," the requester said; the board approved the installation.
All items were approved by voice vote; staff will coordinate scheduling, notifications and any required traffic-control measures.
