Board approves right‑turn lane changes at US‑30 intersection and Valpo High entrance

The Board of Works approved two traffic and safety recommendations intended to reduce conflicts at two locations: the Washington Street/US 30 signalized intersection and the Valpo High School entrance on Valpo Park Road.
Engineering Department presenter Max said Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), which maintains the signal at Washington Street and US 30, supports changing the southbound westmost shared through/right lane to right‑turn only following a police department recommendation. "They are in favor of changing the southbound west most lane from a through and right turn lane to be right turn only," Max said, adding the change responds to vehicles trying to speed through as traffic narrows to one lane.
At Valpo High School, Max said the school resource officer requested a right‑turn lane eastbound on Valpo Park Road. The city plans a 10‑foot pathway south of the curb line in that corridor this year; staff recommended relocating the right of way, removing the existing bike lanes on Valpo Park Road, and providing a designated right‑turn lane. "We recommend approval of this right turn lane," Max said.
Board members approved both items by voice vote.
Staff noted pavement markings will be limited to right‑turn markings; the center lane at the US‑30 intersection will not receive a through marking, which staff described as typical for the location.
