Board approves lane changes at US 30/Washington and right‑turn lane at Valpo High School entrance

The Board of Works approved two traffic-and-safety recommendations from the engineering department to reduce conflict points at two locations. Engineering told the board that Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) maintains the signal at the Washington Street and U.S. 30 intersection and is in favor of converting the southbound westmost shared through/right lane to a right‑turn‑only lane based on police observations of motorists speeding and merging. "They are in favor of changing the southbound west most lane from a through and right turn lane to be right turn only," an engineering representative said. The board approved that change. The second recommendation creates a designated right‑turn lane at the Valpo High School entrance on Valparaiso Park Road, engineering said, and ties to a separate pathway project that will construct a 10‑foot pathway south of the curb line; the right‑turn lane would be provided by relocating the right‑of‑way and removing the bike lanes from Valpo Park Road where width allows. "With this year coming around, we will have a pathway project constructing a 10 foot pathway south of the curb line," the engineering representative said. Board members characterized the Valpo High School entrance change as a safety improvement and approved both traffic changes by voice vote after motions to accept the recommendations.
