The Bedford School Board on Monday approved its annual summer‑hiring authorization, allowing the superintendent to make hires during the summer months and place any such hires on the next regular board meeting materials list.
Board members said the flexibility helps the district secure candidates who may be less likely to wait for a board meeting to accept an offer. The board discussed likely near‑term hires: a kindergarten teacher, and vacancies the superintendent described as possible openings for speech or clinical psychologists; the high school was expected to hire only one teacher this summer, the superintendent said.
A motion to approve the summer‑hiring memo was made, seconded and approved by voice vote. The superintendent confirmed that any hires made before the next meeting would be listed in that meeting’s materials for public review.
"The purpose of which is to allow us to hire people in the summer when it is a challenging time to get people and, candidates are much more likely to sign the dotted line when we can hire them and not wait 2 weeks for board meeting," the superintendent said when introducing the memo.
