The Committee on Parole denied parole to Cody Jones at a June 11, 2025 hearing after law-enforcement agencies, the victim’s family and the board identified concerns about his prior failure to complete drug-court requirements and broad opposition from the criminal-justice community.
Jones was sentenced in October 2023 to five years (with probation) following a 2022 fatal crash in which he acknowledged using multiple substances prior to the crash. Panel members noted Jones had been revoked out of drug court for positive drug tests and not completing requirements. Multiple stakeholders — including judges, the sheriff’s office and the district attorney — were recorded as opposing parole. Jones’s mother provided a letter and told the board she and the family would support his sobriety and reentry; the panel nonetheless concluded the record and strong opposition required denial.
Why it matters: Board members stressed the combination of public-safety concerns, the seriousness of the crash (a death occurred) and Jones’s prior noncompliance with drug-court programming. The board specified the opposition from law enforcement and victim-family members as key reasons for the denial.
Outcome and next steps: Parole was denied unanimously. Panel members expressed the hope Jones will maintain sobriety and noted his release date was months away; they urged him to use the time to engage in programming and maintain compliance with supervision requirements.
