Keller ISD officials and community partners on July 24 reported that the district’s sixth annual Back to School Bash, held at Fossil Ridge High School, distributed more than 2,000 backpacks and offered health and vision services for families preparing for the new school year.

Why it matters: The event is the district’s primary community outreach to help families obtain school supplies and health checks before the school year, supporting students who might otherwise start the year without needed materials.

What organizers said: Lee Cook, event organizer, told the board the event included just over 2,000 backpacks and school-supply packs assembled by volunteers and the Young Men Service League. The Keller Council of PTAs purchased school supplies for the backpacks; participating businesses dropped off donations at 16 area locations. Approximately 80 vendors — community organizations and district services — were onsite to provide support.

Health services and vendors: The day's services included required vaccinations (vaccination fees covered the vaccine medicine), vision and dental screenings, and school physicals; Medical City Alliance and Freeform Chiropractic were among sponsors providing physicals. Other attractions included a DJ, a photo booth, snow cones and cotton candy, which organizers said helped create a carnival atmosphere and drew families to the event.

Volunteer recognition and impact: Cook singled out the Fossil Ridge custodial staff and several community organizations for assistance. The event’s goal is to provide a “one-stop shop” for families and ensure students are ready for the school year.

Ending: Organizers said they will review final participation numbers but that the event met its goal of supplying backpacks and services to many district families.
