The Board of Public Works and Safety on Wednesday approved street-use permits for a pair of Crown Point Hockey fundraising "boot drives" and granted a short weekly road closure for Camp Christway, the city said.
The decisions matter to downtown businesses and residents because they temporarily alter traffic patterns and require safety coordination with the police department.
George Patrick, representing Crown Point Hockey, asked the board to approve two dates for fundraising drives: July 19 (rain date July 20) and Sept. 6 (rain date Sept. 7). Patrick listed four downtown intersections where teams planned to collect donations and said the events support varsity and junior varsity teams. The board moved and approved the closure without recorded opposition.
Kevin Culler, chief of security for Christway Church, requested a closure of Anderson Street between North Court Street and Main (Maine) for four Wednesday evenings in June and four in July, between 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., so children crossing between properties can do so safely. Culler showed barricade photos and told the board his security team and medical personnel would staff the event; he said anyone performing traffic detail would wear fluorescent vests. The mayor and board members asked that the church coordinate final barricade placement and safety details with the police chief; police approval was a precondition for the board's support.
Culler also asked whether the church could place caution cones along the yellow centerline during regular Sunday and Wednesday services (09:30 a.m. to about noon). The board said cones that do not impede lanes may be used if the police department approves; that request did not require a Board of Works action.
Both the boot drives and the Christway street-closure motions passed with no recorded opposition.
Board members emphasized the need to preserve restaurant and driveway access in the blocked areas and to follow police guidance on barricade robustness and staffing.
