Corporal Scott Borgstadt of the Sierra Vista Police Department said the department launched an aggressive-driving detail that targets high-collision intersections and problem road segments and that enforcement will increase in school zones when classes resume.
“We started an aggressive driving detail. Right now, it's focusing on high traffic areas, intersections... looking for red light runners, aggressive drivers, speeders,” Borgstadt said on First Watch. He warned drivers officials will monitor school zones closely and that officers will enforce school-bus stopping laws: “You're not gonna get a warning if you pass a stop school bus with its lights flashing and the stop sign out.”
Borgstadt said the department will use a community outreach campaign featuring Bowser, an African tortoise mascot, to remind motorists to slow in school zones and watch for children. The tortoise will appear at local schools, including Village Meadow, during the first day of classes.
The department asked motorists to exercise caution, obey posted school-zone limits and stop for school buses to protect students as the academic year begins.
