Volunteer Interfaith Caregiver Program seeks drivers to expand countywide no-cost rides

VCAP, based in Sierra Vista, provides rides for seniors (60 and older) and people with medical disabilities to appointments and errands. Gill said volunteers use their own vehicles and receive mileage reimbursement. She said the program has 67 registered volunteers but only 35–40 are active in a typical month and that some areas of Cochise County currently lack volunteers — she named Douglas, Bisbee and Tombstone as places with limited or no coverage.
Gill asked residents who can volunteer to call VCAP at (520) 459-8146. She also encouraged residents who need rides to call so the program can register them and attempt to serve them. The director said volunteers typically are retirees and that the program has served the county for more than 30 years.
