Committee recommends removing time‑limit parking on South Street, cites change in land use

Northampton’s Legislative Matters Committee recommended on July 17 that the City Council remove a time‑limited parking restriction on South Street, forwarding the ordinance with a positive recommendation.
The change was referred to the committee from the City Council on June 18, 2025. Committee members and Transportation and Parking Commission staff said the restriction dates to when a veterinary office occupied the site; the building is now used for residences, and the commission recommended removing the time limit.
“we talked about them in transportation at the Transportation and Parking Commission where all 3 of them received a positive recommendation,” Counselor Jarrett said, summarizing the commission’s review. During the committee discussion Counselor Perry said, “Well, as I said before, I live on that street, and I used to take my cat there was nice to walk. But I would move to approve this.”
The committee voted by voice and recorded no opposition. The item (ordinance 25‑280, “ordinance relative to parking on South Street,” referred by City Council 06/18/2025) will be forwarded to the full City Council with a positive recommendation.
The committee recorded the action as a recommendation only; no ordinance was adopted at the committee level. The Transportation and Parking Commission’s recommendation and the committee’s positive referral are the next steps before council consideration.
