City staff told the Planning and Economic Development Commission that the new British Petroleum electric vehicle (EV) charging station in town appears physically near completion but remains closed to the public because BP is completing security, architectural and app-integration work.
Craig, speaking during director’s reports, said the decision to open is BP's and city staff have offered a temporary opening arrangement while BP finalizes outstanding items. Craig said the site has a full-time security guard and a construction camera system in place, but the permanent security and electronic access systems (which connect charging stations, restrooms and lounge doors to a user app) remain incomplete. He said those systems and the company’s internal rollout decisions have delayed public opening, and that BP has been ‘‘closed-lipped’’ with staff while it finalizes its national rollout and app functions.
Staff explained BP is still addressing several small items, mainly security-related and a few architectural issues, and that the company is opening similar sites elsewhere, including near LAX, as part of a broader rollout. Staff said they hope BP will agree to the temporary opening pathway while completing final integrations.
The update did not include a firm opening date. Staff urged residents with questions to understand the delay is a BP operational decision and not a pending local permit denial.
