Commission staff presented a summary of community conversations held in 2023–2024 about how first responders should operate in Vallejo and the county.
The presenter described work with a statewide partner, Public Health Advocates, and said small-group sessions asked residents to choose preferred responses for real-life scenarios. Staff reported five modalities in Solano County, including mobile crisis teams, and that participants raised concerns about safety, the training and tools responders bring, and a fear of involving law enforcement in some crises.
Staff said participants wanted clearer information about who responds to which calls and what training responders have for situations involving mental health, autism or other diagnoses. The presentation also included cost context for taxpayer-funded responses and ambulance transports.
No policy decision was taken; staff said a fuller presentation will be scheduled for a later meeting and commissioners asked staff to invite iHeart and other providers to explain intake and referral procedures.
Ending: Staff will produce a structured presentation and the commission directed staff to pursue provider presentations and data that clarify response roles, training and costs.
