Commissioners at a Huntington Park Health and Education Commission meeting pressed city staff for details about the HP With You immigration assistance program and were told staff will follow up with specifics by email and bulletin distribution.
During departmental reports Commissioner Delgado asked, “Are you all offering screening clinics?” A staff member replied, “I have not been written up on the specifics of the program. I've had the periphery information as they're putting together. I don't know the specifics of what is actually offered, what is not offered.” The staff member invited commissioners to send specific questions by email and offered to copy the commission on follow-up responses.
Staff told the commission they had invited Commissioner Rivas to join the weekly bulletin distribution so new commissioners receive current program updates. The commission also asked staff about producing small “know-your-rights” materials for residents who may encounter immigration enforcement; staff said they will first “see what are the objectives of the current [program], because we don't want to double the resources,” and then provide a cohesive recommendation.
Separately, staff said they will provide Brown Act information and procedural guidance to the new commissioner to ensure compliance with open-meeting rules. Commissioners also asked staff to confirm when the city's health fair will occur so the commission can coordinate participation; staff said the fair is spearheaded by Sergio and that they will check with him and report back.
Early in the meeting a staff member noted that a scheduled presentation had been canceled: “The presentation got canceled due to the ICE raids,” a staff member said; staff left open the possibility of rescheduling that presentation when it is safe for presenters.
No formal votes were taken on program service details; staff were assigned to provide written follow-up, confirm health-fair timing and ensure the newly appointed commissioner receives onboarding materials.
