Provost Newman and Vice President Pamela Brown presented a new University of California dashboard that maps alumni career pathways, top employers and employer skill demands using California Employment Development Department data and new analytics from Lightcast.
Brown said the dashboard identifies major employers hiring UC alumni across all 10 campuses and shows occupational pathways and changing skill requirements. Using examples from Apple, Disney and Kaiser Permanente, she illustrated how UC graduates work in engineering, entertainment, health care and management roles and how employer skills requests have shifted — for example toward Python and software development skills for some engineering roles.
The presentation emphasized three uses: helping students and career centers see where UC alumni work and what skills they report; giving deans and academic planners near‑real‑time labor market intelligence to align curricula; and supporting alumni engagement and fundraising by identifying employer clusters.
Regents suggested practical next steps. Regent Wang argued the system should invest more in alumni engagement and make data available by campus to support career centers and fundraising. Regent Anguiano recommended using the data for lifelong‑learning and continuing education offerings. Several regents asked that dashboards be integrated into campus advising and career planning so students can use them from early in their academic careers.
Provost Newman said the Office of the President will make campus‑filterable dashboards available so each campus can view its alumni outcomes and that this work will inform a “degree plus” initiative to strengthen students’ workforce preparation.
The administration said the dashboard was released in the UC Information Center earlier in the week and that communications teams have begun regional outreach and media placement to publicize the findings.
