Council approves emergency appropriation to replace Salem Road tornado siren after lightning strike

Conway City Council on July 22 approved an emergency ordinance to appropriate funds for replacement and repair of tornado sirens after lightning destroyed a siren behind the Salem Road fire station.
Council member Jake Hawkins presented the request and noted American Signal Corporation inspected the unit and determined it could not be repaired and must be replaced. City staff said the damaged siren was one of several in the system and that replacement of the Salem Road unit would be accompanied by purchases of parts and upgrades for additional sirens; staff described an estimate of about $35,000 for the primary siren plus roughly $7,000 for additional parts and upgrades and a small contingency for the rest of the fiscal year.
Council approved the ordinance with the emergency clause by an 8–0 vote; the item was recorded as Ordinance No. 56 on the meeting agenda. Councilors noted several other sirens are aging and staff said replacements are being phased in as funds allow.
