The Conway City Council on July 22 approved multiple ordinances to appropriate funds for Conway Police Department equipment and to return reimbursed funds to department accounts. The votes were unanimous.
Chief Harris told the council the air conditioning unit on the department’s mobile command unit had failed and was beyond repair; the unit is about 20 years old, and officials requested use of forfeiture funds to replace the HVAC and to purchase a generator to power the command unit when deployed. The generator will allow on-scene computer equipment and other systems to run during incidents and planned operations.
Council also approved purchase of replacement computer equipment for patrol vehicles. Harris said 19 patrol vehicles contain laptops that cannot be upgraded to Windows 11 and that their in-car modems have reached end-of-life. Replacing the laptops and modems will restore security updates, remote software capability and GPS functions. City staff said equipment removed from older vehicles can be transferred to newly purchased units when available, avoiding duplicate purchases.
Finally, council approved an ordinance to appropriate reimbursement funds to the police department (primarily payment for extra-duty services), returning the money to the correct accounts.
All three measures passed 8–0 and will be funded from listed department accounts and forfeiture proceeds as described by staff.
