Greg Goodnight, executive director of the Redevelopment Commission, said he met recently with representatives of the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) at the request of a local business owner to discuss signage, right‑turn and U‑turn configurations, and landscape plantings along Pendleton Pike.
Goodnight said INDOT had placed signage and that the conversation included whether to lift a prohibition on right turns on red at an intersection that had previously been restricted to prevent conflicts with U‑turn movements. “They were open to changing that one,” Goodnight said, while noting INDOT’s primary concern is avoiding an uptick in collisions.
Goodnight also said INDOT has not approved the commission’s original planting and streetscape design and that the commission should form a small committee to refine proposals and pursue quick improvements for the ‘bookends’ of Pendleton Pike near I‑465 and the Oakland area, with work aimed for late July. He asked commissioners to respond by e‑mail with volunteers to participate.
A commissioner asked whether other nearby projects were being coordinated; Goodnight said the meeting mainly addressed business concerns nearer I‑465 and did not include the project at 56th Street. The discussion was informational; no formal commission action was taken at the meeting.
Less critical details: Goodnight described the long‑term goal as improving the corridor’s appearance and safety; INDOT approvals and collision data will guide whether right‑turn restrictions are reinstated or altered.
