Greg Goodnight, chief of staff for the City of Lawrence, told the Common Council on June 18 that the city’s liability insurance contract ends at the end of June and the administration is soliciting multiple quotes.
"It looks like we're gonna be paying higher premiums," Goodnight said, adding that there is a strong chance the city’s deductibles will increase. He said the administration expects to give insurers data they are using and to make a decision on renewal options by the end of next week.
Goodnight also said the city is conducting an internal audit "as we speak" and expected results by mid-July to prepare for a possible visit from the Indiana State Board of Accounts, which typically gives only two to three days’ notice before arriving. He confirmed the city controller has submitted a resignation effective July 31 but remains on staff and working through that date.
Councilors asked follow-up questions about the insurance timeline and the audit; Goodnight replied that the administration had reached out through a broker for multiple quotes and that some underlying incidents affecting premiums predate current council and administration members. No specific premium or deductible amounts were provided at the meeting.
