Planning commission and BZA approvals clear Walker Park improvements including ADA restrooms and expanded parking

The parks board heard an update Feb. 18 that the city’s planning commission and the Board of Zoning Appeals approved petition 25 XO1, which amends site plan 98 XO6 to permit additional uses and improvements at Walker Park.
According to the board liaison’s report, the approved scope includes construction of an ADA‑compliant family restroom with a changing station, drinking fountain with bottle filler, storage for park programming, a new pavilion, an expanded playground, additional native landscaping and memorial tree plantings, expanded parking and a recontoured hillside. The restroom will include security cameras, internal motion sensors and heating for year‑round use.
Board members discussed public concerns about restroom security and vandalism; staff said those concerns were addressed in the project design by adding cameras, motion sensors and heating to minimize pipe freeze. The liaison said the petition passed unanimously at the planning commission and subsequently passed the BZA, clearing those land‑use approvals.
No construction timeline or final budget figures were presented at the board meeting. Staff identified the approvals as necessary land‑use steps before permitting and construction.
