The Kent City Schools Board of Education on July 22 voted to honor Treasurer Deborah A. Cruz for 45 years of service and to name the second-floor Board of Education conference room after her. The board read a proclamation recounting Cruz’s hiring in June 1980, her career as treasurer/CFO and community involvement, including mentoring and a lending library at Akron Children’s Hospital. The proclamation was read during the meeting and the board moved and seconded a resolution to approve the naming; a roll-call vote recorded unanimous approval. Board President Tiara Moore read the proclamation and presented it to Cruz, who responded that she felt “blessed to have served” the district. Former board member Jim Myers attended and spoke earlier in the meeting recognizing Cruz’s career. The naming is purely honorary and does not change operations or budget; the board completed the vote at the meeting and will publish the formal minutes with the recorded vote.
