The Tangipahoa Parish School Board recognized Civil Air Patrol cadets and adult volunteers June 3 for statewide and regional awards, and also honored local student-athletes who won state championships.
Major Larry Morgan and civil air patrol leaders presented awards for achievements that included cadet of the year honors, regional public-affairs and aerospace awards, and a national-level Cadet Lifesaving Award given to Cadet Senior Airman Preston Carter of Sumner High School for rendering lifesaving aid while volunteering with a local fire department.
Dr. Lisa Fassell and other board members praised the growth of the program across the parish. Major Morgan and presenters said the program began with 18 cadets in a single location and has expanded to multiple schools; at one point a speaker noted “now we are in, I believe 9 schools across the parish” and cited cadet enrollments reported at either 108 or 180 in different remarks during the meeting.
Board members and school administrators celebrated the program’s impact on students’ leadership, discipline and college- and career-oriented skills. The meeting also included recognition of several state athletics champions from Kentwood High School and La Rondeau High School, with specific athletes' results announced during the awards segment.
No board action or funding request for the Civil Air Patrol program was taken during the meeting; the presentations were acknowledgments and awards only.
