Mahwah highlights summer programs, AP results and expanding student internships

The Mahwah Board of Education on July 23 received reports on summer academic and extracurricular programs, Advanced Placement results and student internship and externship placements.
The presentations underscored enrichment opportunities for students. "This summer, our students have been fully engaged in joyful, enriching learning experiences," Dr. Fair, staff member, told the board, describing hands-on projects, collaborative activities and field trips, including a visit to Pony Power in Mahwah where students connected with horses.
Board members saw slides showing student participation in community projects and athletics. Dr. Fair said students who worked with Habitat for Humanity signed a beam that will go into a local build, noting the district’s logo will appear on one beam. The music program also featured a high-school ensemble touring Europe under an American Music Abroad program; Dr. Fair identified Miss Margaret Foles as the staff member leading that trip.
Academic results were a highlight: Dr. Fair reported that "over 93 percent of Mahwah students earned a score of 3 or higher," the benchmark commonly used to indicate AP college-readiness, and that 35 students earned recognition as AP scholars for earning scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams.
The presentation also described internships and externships: Avril, a student in the engineering and technology pathway, worked at Danmore Architects; Lina, from the performing arts pathway, served as a teaching intern in a summer music program; and Alex Huang, a rising senior and business-administration extern in central office, assisted with payroll, bank reconciliations, leave-of-absence research and interview processes. "Alex generated questions. He asked questions. He participated in, asking follow-up questions, and, we did a lot of reflecting afterwards," Dr. Fair said.
The board’s instruction and curriculum committee used the meeting to officially welcome Miss Jody Craft as the district’s new director of curriculum and instruction.
Board members praised the programs and said the internships provide meaningful real-world experience; no formal action or votes were required for the presentations. The reports will inform fall planning and committee work as the district finalizes goals for the coming school year.
