Sarah Phelps, the district communications lead, presented the July edition of the district’s Super News program at the July 22 board meeting, summarizing summer activities and outreach metrics and introducing a recorded segment featuring Penn TV staff.
Phelps told the board the packet contains press releases, social‑media statistics and a “Super News” rundown. The July program highlights included a four‑week STEAM Camp at the district’s MoMA Center and Planetarium for grades 1–5, an academic games camp with high‑school mentors, the Crew of Saint Bernard summer program for elementary students, a student production of Disney’s Newsies at the Cultural Arts Center, and the two‑week Summer Cultural Arts Enrichment Program for grades 3–7.
The program also spotlighted Teach St. Bernard, an alternative teacher‑certification pathway held at Chalmette Elementary that provides classroom experience and mentorship for candidates seeking certification. Phelps closed her presentation by reminding families that the district’s first day of classes is Aug. 8 and asked viewers to follow schools on social media for updates.
The meeting included a recorded and live tribute to Barry Lemoine, a longtime Penn TV editor and producer. Lemoine recounted Penn TV’s origins, its role documenting the district’s recovery after Hurricane Katrina, and his work producing dozens of shows and outreach videos. “I am forever indebted to him and to all of you who have helped us tell the stories and share the good news,” Lemoine said in his remarks. The board thanked Lemoine for his service; staff said he will return to help mark Penn TV’s 100th episode in September.
Jack Jackson, credited in the program as producer and editor, and Phelps were both recognized for their ongoing communications work. Phelps’s packet—also described as the source for monthly “Super News”—will be used for upcoming outreach leading into the school year.
