District reports summer curriculum training, new civics program and continued I‑Ready rollout

Terrebonne Parish School District academic leaders briefed the school board on summer curriculum work, teacher training and forthcoming materials for the 2025–26 school year.

Angela Rose, the district's chief academic officer, said teachers, paras, principals and assistant principals received training this summer in special education classroom centers, tiered interventions and the next phase of the I‑Ready math program. "We had regular ed, special ed, all K to 8 teachers, principals, and assistant principals at different days trained on the math program which is... helping our children to succeed at this time," Rose said.

Rose said the district will use Foundations of Freedom, a state‑aligned civics program developed in partnership with Core Knowledge for K–5 civics and future U.S. history materials. "Our civics teachers are going to be using a new program called Foundations of Freedom. It is aligned to our standards, and it's been put out by the state," she said.

Rose also reported the district has continued use of Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) materials in lower grades and plans expanded social studies resources as the Core Knowledge company partners with the state to provide curricula for civics and U.S. history.

Board members asked whether the district partners with universities to ensure social studies teachers are prepared to teach the new civics requirement; Rose said that is not currently publicized but that the district could explore outreach to teacher‑preparation programs.

District staff said a fuller curriculum update will be provided at the committee meeting in August, when each curriculum department will present back-to-school preparations and early observations from the opening of schools.
