The Tangipahoa Parish School Board Capital Outlay Committee voted to approve the low quote from Woodhaven Woodworks to replace football lockers at Hammond High Magnet School for $120,000.
Committee members said the current metal lockers at Hammond have exceeded their useful life and lack security. “Hammond has been asking for their locker to be replaced, I think, for at least a year and a half,” a board member said, noting the existing lockers date back to around 1990.
The administration presented the contract as consistent with a new facilities policy that routes projects of this size to Capital Outlay. “We're going ahead and complying as if the new policy, the facility policy is in effect,” Jeff, a staff member, told the committee. Committee members discussed the construction and unit cost of the new lockers; one board member described the $1,000-per-locker range as reflecting laminated millwork with seating, shell and hardware rather than simple wood panels.
Board members compared the Hammond request with recent locker projects at other schools. One member said Independence High’s recent locker work cost about $70,000 and praised the contractor’s local work. Committee members pressed for a systemwide inventory and standard so future requests can be evaluated against a common specification and to consider bundling projects for potential economies of scale.
After discussion, the committee called for a vote; voting closed with the motion to accept the low quote passing. The administration said it will return with additional information on other schools’ needs and any opportunities to consolidate work across sites.
Details recorded in the meeting: the approved low quote is for $120,000 to Woodhaven Woodworks; the project was presented as capital outlay work under the administration’s facilities policy. No statutory citations or further funding-source breakdowns were provided at the meeting.
Board members and staff said they will compile a list of remaining locker and facility needs and return proposals to the committee for future decisions.
