School board approves AI acceptable-use policy

The school board on a voice vote unanimously approved Policy EFAC, a district acceptable-use guideline for artificial intelligence on the first agenda item. The measure, presented by Dina Spears, was described as a set of recommendations drawn from a Louisiana educational technology group and adapted for district use.

The policy’s purpose and origin were the primary points presented. "We have an education a Louisiana educational technology, group that got together and talked about artificial intelligence and and how we want our students to use it and kinda came up with a, a guideline or a policy," Dina Spears said while presenting the item, adding that district staff "took that and tweaked it" for local use.

Board members asked whether the policy had been reviewed by legal counsel. "Has it been vetted legally?" a board member asked; the chair later confirmed, "Our lawyers looked over it. Forethought reviewed it." The board moved and seconded the item, took a voice vote and the chair announced, "Motion passes unanimously."

The approved document, described by staff as adapted from an external education-technology group and reviewed by the district’s lawyers, will be added to district policy under EFAC. The board took no further policy-directed amendments during the vote.

The adoption closes initial board review; staff indicated they were available to answer questions and no follow-up assignment or additional approvals were recorded on the transcript.
