Lowndes County launches first junior firefighter camp; community funds support activities

Lowndes County Fire Rescue launched its first junior firefighter camp this week at Station 10 on Highway 84, county officials told commissioners. The weeklong camp serves 19 children ages 11 to 15 and is funded entirely through community donations. Lieutenant Garen organized the camp and Chief Young and county staff described a schedule that included fire-extinguisher training, a vehicle fire and extrication exercise, CPR and first-aid training, and a Georgia Forestry Day with an aerial tanker and helicopter demonstration. Lieutenant Garen said the campers would be trained in fire extinguisher use and would be proficient by the end of that session; he added, "They're all raving about this. They're having a good time." Staff said the camp runs Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and that food and services were donated by local businesses including Bojangles, Pizza Hut, Georgia Forestry and Williams Fire; Commissioner Smith said the department received a $1,000 grant from a Wawa promotion earmarked for next year's camp. Chief Young and Lieutenant Garen said they plan to expand the program next year based on community interest.
