Veterans’ family asks school board to move Taos High Bataan March trophy case to courthouse

Two members of the public told the Taos Municipal Schools Board during the public‑comment period on July 23 that a World War II Bataan March memorial display currently at Taos High School should be moved to the old county courthouse to provide broader public access.
Public commenter Benton Bond read a letter asking that the school’s trophy case be relocated to the remodeled county courthouse at Taos Plaza so the community could see the Bataan March tribute. “I, Benton Bohn, would like to see the trophy case at Taos High School moved to the old remodeled county courthouse at the Taos Plaza so that the Bataan March World War 2 soldiers would better be honored,” Bond read, explaining his father was a Bataan Death March survivor.
Gennardo Medina, whose father was also a WWII prisoner‑of‑war, said some displays are in a classroom at Enos and that moving them to the county courthouse would expose them to more visitors, including tourists. The superintendent recommended that staff contact county project lead Richard Sanchez and the Taos Historical Society to explore a relocation under the auspices of local veterans’ organizations and the VFW.
Board members expressed appreciation for the speakers and asked administration to follow up; no formal action was taken.
