San Juan approves MOU to join regional law-enforcement response team with Weslaco

The San Juan City Commission approved a memorandum of understanding (MOU) enabling the San Juan Police Department to participate in a regional law-enforcement emergency response team (WRRT/Blair SWAT) and to cooperate with the Weslaco Police Department.
Chief Cifuentes answered commissioners’ questions about staffing and operational procedures. Commissioners asked how many members Weslaco would provide; Chief Cifuentes said Weslaco would provide 14 members. The chief clarified that participating officers are not assigned to the regional team full time and that payment for officers’ participation depends on the operation and funding source for particular deployments.
After discussion, the commission approved the MOU by voice vote under the consent portion of the meeting.
The MOU formalizes mutual aid and regional response cooperation; the agreement’s operational details, including pay and activation protocols, will follow the terms of the MOU and established operating procedures, which Chief Cifuentes indicated vary by operation.
