Council directs traffic study on speed humps and calming measures; estimated cost $8,000–$10,000

The City Council on July 23 directed staff to proceed with a traffic study and to draft a speed-hump policy to evaluate possible speed humps and other traffic-calming measures on local streets. Public Works staff (engineering) told the council the city’s traffic engineer estimated the study would cost approximately $8,000–$10,000. Staff said the study requires updated traffic counts and speed data for selected segments and that the data collection should occur during the school year to reflect typical conditions. The council clarified they wanted the study to consider alternatives to speed humps and requested the policy include other traffic-calming options; staff said the traffic engineer would recommend whether speed humps or alternative measures were appropriate based on the study results. A motion directing staff to pursue the study and policy returned unanimously on roll-call vote. Council members will later be asked to approve the study as a budgeted cost item before work proceeds.
