Board hears athletic facilities updates; approves earlier middle‑school game start date

Director of Schools Dr. Langford said several stadium and field projects are near completion: Portland’s field was described as “pretty much done,” Beech’s Stadium is complete, Hendersonville’s construction is progressing quickly as crews set steel, and Westmoreland and Gallatin have new lights and fencing installed. Dr. Langford said field work has been slowed by frequent rain and that some sites need dry weather before new sod and other finishing work can be completed. He also mentioned a new playground surface at the Gallatin Early Learning Center intended to improve accessibility.

Why it matters: Facility upgrades affect practice schedules, game availability and after‑school programming; district staff said improved lighting will save money over time and give coaches phone‑based control of lights.

On policy, the board considered policy 43012 (middle‑school athletics) on first reading and approved the change. Board discussion noted the policy moves the middle‑school football start date to August 8 to align preseason activity and official scheduling; officials thanked referees for coordination. The motion to approve passed on first reading.

No formal vote on construction contracts was taken during the facilities report; the presentation was informational and staff said progress updates will continue as projects move toward completion.
