School board approves Apple equipment lease to outfit teachers and staff

The Sumner County School Board voted July 22 to approve an Apple Equipment Lease Purchase Agreement that will spread the district’s purchase of teacher and administrative devices over multiple years.
The lease, described at the meeting as a four‑year, ‘‘dollar lease’’ with 0% interest, will place devices in the hands of teachers and administrators and is intended to centralize device management and reduce the equipment burden on individual schools. Director of Schools Dr. Langford said the state classifies the arrangement as a lease because payments are spread out rather than paid in a single upfront sum; at the end of the lease the district owns the devices and may sell them back.
Why it matters: The board and staff said the change aims to make device replacement predictable, manage support centrally, and free school fundraising and district device funds for direct classroom needs.
Dr. Langford told the board that roughly 6,000 employees and about 2,600 certified staff are in the district’s staffing pool and that the district plans to prioritize MacBook Airs for most teachers while assigning PCs to staff with software needs that require a PC. He said the plan includes five iPads per K–2 classroom in some schools and administrator iPads for on‑the‑go management.
Chris, the district’s information‑technology staff member who described the management setup, said the district will use a system called MOSIL to push software and settings and to manage Mac and iPad updates and apps by user role. "MOSIL allows us...to push out things to Macs," Chris said. He added that Apple’s operating‑system updates would be delivered through Apple and that app and configuration deployment would be handled by the district’s mobile‑device management process.
Board member Lancaster asked whether the lease includes AppleCare and replacements; Dr. Langford and staff said AppleCare and support were included as part of the procurement.
The board approved the lease on a motion, with a second from board member Miss Hayes. Dr. Langford noted that Tennessee leases must ultimately be approved by the county commission after the board vote.
Next steps: The board’s approval permits staff to finalize the lease and then present the lease to the Sumner County Commission for the county‑level approval required by state law.
