Flagler School Board proclaims first week of classes as pedestrian, bicyclist safety week

The Flagler County School Board on July 22 accepted a proclamation designating the first full week of school in August 2025 as pedestrian and bicyclist safety week in Flagler County.
The proclamation, presented by Chairman Andy Dance of the Board of County Commissioners and partners from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and the Volusia-Flagler Transportation Planning Organization, said walking and bicycling are “viable and environmentally sound forms of transportation” and urged motorists and guardians to be vigilant as students return to school. “This is our annual pedestrian and cyclist safety proclamation,” Andy Dance said while presenting the resolution to the board.
The proclamation notes Florida’s pedestrian safety challenges, citing the 2024 Dangerous by Design report from Smart Growth America and saying the Daytona Beach–Deltona–Ormond metro area (which includes parts of Flagler County) ranked among the deadliest places to walk in the state. It also encourages bicyclists and pedestrians to increase visibility by wearing reflective clothing and using lights, and urges parents and guardians to teach children to obey crossing guards.
School and community partners named in the proclamation include the Florida Department of Transportation’s Target Zero initiative, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office bicycle-safety team and Operation Pedestrian Alert, the Volusia-Flagler Transportation Planning Organization’s bicycle and pedestrian safety program (which provides helmets and planning), and the Flagler County Community Traffic Safety Team, an FDOT-based coalition that has worked on crosswalk projects across the county.
Presenters said the partners will offer outreach around the back-to-school period, including helmet fittings and materials at community events. The proclamation called on residents to “recognize the important initiative by taking appropriate precautions to ensure the safety of all students using our roadways.”
The board did not record a separate vote on the proclamation during the presentation; it was presented and accepted as part of the meeting’s special announcements.
