Board approves moving middle school girls’ softball to fall pending other schools’ participation

The South Fayette School District board approved a recommendation to move middle school girls’ softball from the spring season to the fall starting in the 2025–26 school year, contingent on other member schools’ participation.
Mark Keener, the district’s athletic director, said several area athletic directors have discussed the change and that moving the middle school season to the fall would reduce field conflicts with varsity and junior varsity schedules, decrease competition for umpires in spring, and allow varsity coaches to be more involved in middle-school development. “If we move them to the fall, they wouldn’t have to compete with the varsity and JV for the field,” Keener said.
Keener said he hoped to recruit four or five other teams to make a viable league schedule; he remained optimistic the district could field a six-week, 15-game season if enough schools sign on. The board approved athletics items, including the recommendation to move the middle school softball season, in a roll of motion-and-second recorded during the athletics portion of the consent items.
The action was recorded as approved subject to the availability of other member schools; Keener said he would continue outreach to other districts and bring any scheduling updates back to the board.
