Council committee approves $261,500 transfer to fix failing drainage on Tonto near Third Street

The committee approved a resolution to transfer and appropriate $261,500 for repairs to failing drainage along Tonto near Third Street (project ST03234). Manny Vellin with the Division of Engineering described the work as targeted to approximately 50–100 feet west of Third Street to alleviate recurring flooding in that area. Vellin said the project has been under development for some time and that the city could issue a notice to proceed for construction once the funding is appropriated.
Council members confirmed the project ties to prior neighborhood flooding concerns and asked whether related HUD resiliency grant work for South Cypress Creek and other projects was progressing. Vellin said the HUD resiliency grant is managed by Shelby County and that portions of the related projects were more than 50% complete; he offered to obtain more detailed status information from county counterparts for council members.
The committee recorded approval to forward the appropriation with a positive recommendation; the motion was moved by Councilman Ford Sr. and seconded by Councilman Smiley.
