Lubbock ISD administrators presented a quarterly update on a multi‑year leadership pipeline designed to grow internal candidates for campus and central‑office leadership. The program includes a range of initiatives: a 50/50 teacher leader model (half teaching, half instructional coaching), principal residency and Tech Fellow partnerships with Texas Tech University, assistant principal and principalship development cohorts, and a campus leadership team partnership with the Holdsworth Center.
District leaders said the leadership definition and leader‑level profiles are being rolled out to staff with a central hub of materials, videos and templates so principals can share the framework with teachers. A rollout plan was described that will cover leadership competencies across the school year.
Highlights: cohort 1 of the 50/50 model includes six campuses and 16 teacher leaders who received multi‑day training and will continue with monthly coaching; the district will expand the model over five years. The district also reported principal vacancy planning and talent talks to maintain a roughly 2:1 ratio of ready leaders to openings, and shared timelines for principal onboarding, mentor pairing and a mentor/triad support model.
The Holdsworth partnership will immerse participating principals and their plus‑one team members in a two‑year, problem‑of‑practice cycle with executive coaching; the district has 22 campuses participating across cohorts and expects 88 leaders to complete the Holdsworth sequence by the end of the grant period.
Trustees requested quarterly updates and asked about cohort selection criteria and scaling; staff said applications, rubrics and interviews are used for campus selection and teacher leader selection and that funding for teacher release time is prioritized by principals using Title funds.
