The Lubbock Independent School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously to hire Sarah Alvarez as principal of Centennial Elementary School following the board's reconvening from closed session. The motion to hire Alvarez carried without opposition.
Alvarez told the board she has worked in Lubbock ISD for 24 years and served the last six years as assistant principal at Centennial. "I'm truly honored and deeply grateful for your recommendation as the next principal of Centennial Elementary," she said, adding that she is “passionate about the mission we share to serve every child every day.”
The nut graf: Alvarez has long ties to the district and the Coronado feeder pattern; trustees described the hire as an example of “growing our own” leadership and thanked her for her service. Board members offered congratulatory remarks after the vote and the board recessed briefly for photographs.
Board President Bridges asked if there were any actions following closed session; a trustee moved to hire Alvarez and a second was recorded. Alvarez thanked family members in the audience and district leaders who supported her candidacy.
Discussion: Trustees praised Alvarez’s experience and ties to the campus and feeder pattern; no dissenting remarks were recorded. The board also noted that a previously scheduled decision on hiring an executive director of facilities was being tabled to a future meeting.
The decision is effective immediately. Alvarez said she looks forward to continuing the work at Centennial and to leading the campus in alignment with district goals.
