County engineer reports roadwork progress, bridge cracks and a vehicle incident at M-41 and J-28

JD King, identified himself as Fayette County Engineer, briefed the meeting on ongoing road and equipment work and described a vehicle incident at the intersection of M-41 and J-28.

King said crews completed a second fog-seal application on M-41 East Avenue and that pipe crews were working on a replacement in the northeast part of town. “For the first time in 12 years, we had a little incident at the intersection of M-41 and J-28. That vehicle ended up in the ditch,” King said. He said the driver drove back onto the highway and that the county was waiting on the sheriff’s report.

King reported fuel pumps installed but not yet hooked up and described maintenance and service schedules for motor graders and trucks. He said riprap work and guardrail installation were nearly complete on a north-northeast bridge cleanup project and that crack concerns on another bridge had prompted discussions with the state Department of Transportation and a consultant about future concrete mixes for bridge decks.

When asked whether the crack posed a short life expectancy for the bridge, King said the steel reinforcement remained in place and estimated design life for modern bridges at about 75 years: “75 years should be design life at bridges these days,” he said. He did not say the bridge needed immediate replacement.

King also noted planned concrete patching on J C between Nutmeg and Oak avenues, with one lane closed at a time and flaggers and pilot cars. The engineer closed by inviting questions and said some matters, including the sheriff’s report on the accident, would be resolved after receiving official documentation.

No formal vote or directive on bridge repair was recorded during the meeting.
