The commission approved a resolution urging the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners to authorize municipalities to set and maintain 20 miles-per-hour speed limits on designated local roadways within their jurisdictions.

Staff said the resolution reflected earlier community discussions and direction from the commission to proactively seek county approval to preserve 20 mph limits on interior streets rather than allowing a countywide increase to 25 mph. Resident David Virgil spoke in favor of preserving lower speed limits, saying a 20 mph limit “would help keep pedestrians safe” and noting town-hall feedback supported the lower speed.

Commissioners asked staff to follow up with county representatives and to request updated traffic and calming studies, and some asked for staff to press the county for additional traffic-calming measures where needed. The resolution passed by voice vote. Staff said the item would be used to support county-level deliberations and to request specific traffic-calming follow-up where speeding is persistent.
