Sunny Isles Beach directs staff to launch public engagement on scooters and e-bikes

The commission unanimously directed the City Manager to begin a public engagement process and develop a comprehensive action plan to address motorized scooter and electric bicycle use under new state law. City Manager reported staff will prepare a plan for the commission that includes enhanced enforcement measures and community outreach. Commissioners stressed they did not want a consultant hired for the project and requested that staff coordinate with local school officials so enforcement and outreach are aligned with school policies. Commissioners and residents raised concerns about sidewalks being shared by seniors and scooter users and asked for a timely staff report.
The resolution passed unanimously; staff committed to bring a draft action plan and public engagement schedule "as soon as we can." The commission gave direction that the school board should be invited to participate but should not be allowed to delay the city's process if the board does not respond promptly.
