Board approves $126,527 rehab contract for 719 West Charles to prepare supportive housing

The Muncie Board of Public Works and Safety approved Jan. 8 a contract with Old West End Neighborhood Economic Revitalization Corporation for $126,527 to rehabilitate 719 West Charles Street.
Gretchen Cheeseman, director of community development, said the work will remove a rear addition, shore a severely damaged basement wall that became visible when crews accessed the roof, and make the building weather-tight for the next construction phase.
"We got into working on the roof and found that there's a real severe structural issue in the basement that you couldn't see until you got on top of it," Cheeseman said. She said the building is currently vacant and will be converted to permanent supportive housing as part of a larger state-funded project; the city must ensure the structure is sound before transferring it to the supportive-housing developer.
A board member moved and seconded approval of the contract; the board approved the funding by voice vote.
Cheeseman and staff did not provide a detailed implementation schedule during the meeting. The contract covers structural stabilization and weatherization required to move the project into the next rehabilitation phase for supportive housing.
