The Muncie Board of Public Works and Safety approved street closures for Open Door Health Services’ Decades Dash, scheduled for Oct. 11.
Carrie Bonczak, chief clinical officer and vice president of operations at Open Door, told the board the event is the organization’s second annual run and this year adds a 10K in addition to the 5K to mark its 50th anniversary. "This time we are adding additional closures because we're adding a 10 k to it," Bonczak said.
Bonczak said she has worked with the police and fire chiefs and the race coordinator (identified in the record as Bridal Racing) on the route and traffic plan. She estimated a total event window of about 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.; as runners pass, some street closures may be opened intermittently. The planned route travels north on Walnut and uses Minnetrista and the Cardinal Greenway to keep runners off major roads where possible.
Board members asked how the public would be notified. Bonczak said organizers would place signage along affected streets the day before the race and would use social media and press outreach. A board member suggested the application should itemize the specific streets that will be closed; Bonczak indicated she has provided a map and will update the application if needed.
A motion to approve the street-closure request passed by voice vote. Bonczak said the event drew positive feedback last year and reported no complaints from the prior year.
