The Prosper ISD Board of Trustees voted to approve policy changes Wednesday that implement recent state legislative changes on student devices, extracurricular eligibility for homeschool students and to create a community library committee.
The action affects students across the district because it clarifies where and when personal cellular devices may be used on campus and whether students enrolled in homeschool programs may participate in district extracurricular activities.
Dr. Ferguson, the superintendent, said administrators recommended following the state law and restricting cellular communication devices so they are "out of sight, out of mind" during instructional settings and common areas such as hallways and cafeterias. He added that exceptions will be handled at the campus level for students who need devices for health support: "we'll certainly make that available and work through each of those concerns at the campus level."
On homeschool participation, district staff recommended not allowing homeschooled students to participate in extracurriculars because of the district's current growth and capacity constraints. "Our recommendation is that we do not allow that, and that really has everything to do with just our immense growth," Dr. Ferguson said.
The board also directed staff to form a library committee; administration will return recommended committee names in August and work with library services and the teaching-and-learning department on requests that come through the committee.
Procedural note: the motion to approve changes to board policy was made by Mrs. Dixon, seconded by Mr. Van Wolf, and passed with all trustees voting in favor.
Ending: Policy changes take effect as posted by the district; administrators said they will communicate details to parents and campus leaders and handle individual accommodation requests at campus level.
