The Muncie Board of Public Works and Safety on July 9 approved closing the Washington Street Bridge on Sept. 18 for the Muncie Action Plan Bridge Dinner.

Cheryl Crowder, representing the Muncie Downtown Development Partnership and speaking for the Muncie Action Plan, described the event as a community dinner with tables, vendors and community booths and requested bridge closure and setup time. “The request for the road closure begins at 03:00 for setup,” Crowder said; she told the board the dinner itself is scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and organizers plan to stay until about 8:30 p.m. for cleanup.

Crowder said she works with the police department to arrange traffic control for the event on the Washington Street Bridge and invited the community to the event along the river. A motion to approve the closure was made, seconded and approved by voice vote; the board recorded the motion as carried.

Board members had no further questions recorded on the item. The board’s approval authorizes the closure and delegated traffic control and coordination to city public-safety staff and event organizers for the specified setup, event and cleanup times.
