At its July 23 meeting the Public Safety Committee finalized its biannual report to the town council and approved forwarding the packet, which includes a request to add or clarify budget line items for town events and donations.
Committee members reviewed a draft report summarizing the committee’s activities over the prior months (public‑safety outreach, social media postings, public‑service announcements and planned community events). Members discussed county and town‑level outreach already completed, including a summer safety piece in a community newspaper and social media posts. The committee also reviewed the committee’s current budget, noted an accounting reallocation to an awards line and discussed roundings and minor corrections to several items.
The committee proposed adding explicit budget buckets for 'town events' (to capture event expenses such as filming, sanitation and staging) and for 'donations' (to allow the committee to track philanthropic contributions such as proposed gifts to the PBA Love Fund and fire mental‑health resources). Committee members noted that the committee’s previous understanding with council was that events should not cost the town operating funds, so the committee will present the report and the proposed budget lines to council with preliminary sponsor and revenue estimates.
A motion to forward the updated report and budget language to council passed on a voice vote. Staff said they will include the committee’s clean budget spreadsheet in the council packet and present the summary at the council meeting scheduled in August.
