Council approves first reading to add all-way stop at NE Douglas Parkway and NE Westgate Drive

The Waukee City Council voted to introduce and approve the first reading of an ordinance to install an all-way stop at the intersection of Northeast Douglas Parkway and Northeast Westgate Drive. Staff presented traffic data and recommended proceeding with the stop installation; the council approved the first reading and title only and scheduled a second reading in early August.

City staff said the intersection met two of the six warrants used in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. "This intersection does meet 2 of the 6 warrants that we review in a manual and uniform traffic control devices," Staff member Rudy said, and staff recommended moving forward with the introduction and first reading. Rudy also said staff will deploy portable message signs to alert drivers before installing the stop signs.

The first reading passed on a voice vote with council members Kron, Battenberg, Pierce, Grove and Sinclair recorded as voting yes. Staff said the council would return in early August for a second reading and would waive a third reading to move to final passage and implement the signs thereafter. The council and staff noted additional public notice following installation to remind drivers of the new traffic control.

Implementation details, including exact installation dates and signage placement, were left to staff to schedule and publicize. The ordinance text introduced references Chapter 65 (Stop or Yield Required) as the code section to be amended.
