Supervisors approve contractor work to add secondary exit and secure assessor’s office windows

Joby (staff member) told the Story County Board of Supervisors on July 22 that county staff want to add a secondary exit from the assessor’s office and reinforce several large windows that face the hallway. Joby said the windows are nearly floor‑to‑ceiling and have been leaned on by voters waiting in line during elections, increasing risk to employees and voters.
Joby proposed locating a 36‑inch door adjacent to the stair tower at the west end of the hallway, opening into the stair tower so staff could exit without being visible from the main hallway. Joby said the project had been planned for the fiscal year but that maintenance staffing shortages — three maintenance tech vacancies — make contracting the work necessary and that he did not expect the work to affect his operating budget. Because the cost exceeds $5,000, Joby requested board permission to proceed with a contractor.
A supervisor moved approval and the motion was seconded. Supervisors voted in favor and the board authorized the contractor work. Joby said completing the project will allow staff to focus on other maintenance priorities.
