The Greenbelt City Council voted to expedite installation of new bike‑parking infrastructure outside the Greenbelt Co‑op at Roosevelt Center after residents and councilmembers described the current site as an eyesore and difficult to use.
Councilmember Roberts moved to accelerate installation of a new bike rack and a concrete pad; council discussed whether the matter should be referred to the Advisory Planning Board (APB) for a quick review, and members agreed the location has been identified previously by APB and that expedited installation was appropriate. Staff said the site is currently muddy and that the existing rail is not the city’s preferred rack design; staff recommended an inverted‑U bike rack mounted on a concrete pad for stability and accessibility.
Planning staff noted a 2019 bicycle rack study that identified Roosevelt Center as an area in need of additional racks and said the city had implemented parts of that study previously. Staff said a concept plan and pricing would be prepared and coordinated with Public Works for installation. Council agreed to proceed and voted in favor; staff will prepare the concept, pricing and installation schedule.
Council and staff also discussed a broader inventory and possible upgrades to standard inverted‑U racks across the city and noted interest in adding bike‑repair kiosks in additional locations.
