Century Unified trustees discussed changing the regular meeting start time to 5:30 p.m. during the July 22 meeting to accommodate student board members and reduce meetings that extended late into the night. The proposal would set regular session start times at 5:30 p.m.; the board chair recommended removing language that sets separate closed-session start times from the bylaw so future start-time changes would not require bylaw edits.
Trustees expressed concerns about work schedules and commute times; several said 5:00 p.m. closed sessions would be difficult for members with daytime jobs and long commutes. One trustee proposed setting a regular-session start time of 5:30 p.m. while acknowledging that some members might arrive late and that quorum rules require at least four members present. Trustees agreed to return the proposed revision to Board Bylaw 9320 for action on Aug. 12, with any change to take effect in September to allow public notice and schedule adjustments.
The discussion was informational; no binding action was taken at the July 22 meeting. Staff will prepare the bylaw revision and bring it back to the board for an August 12 vote.
